I've done magic to the family and also to strangers (think street magic). I really like street magic because it is a lot better to mess up then (if you ever do), because chances are you won't see them again. People usually all like magic and are fascinated by it. Perfect for trying out the reactions of new effects.
As for actual shows, I don't have much expertise. The most I've done is an annual show with my cousin (another magic enthusiast), and that is usually strictly card magic or mentalism based things. I want to start doing kids birthday parties, and Tim David has a great program called "Birthday Party Pro (BPP)". Look it up, I've heard good things about it. It'll help you with birthday parties, etc.
If you do these types of shows, however, be prepared to do more spongeball, rope, illusion magic for children. They tend to not be as entertained by cards. Think "flashy-showy", "disappear-appear", "multiplying" magic.

if you are still in school or have a job where lots of people come through then perform for people around you, youll want to perform tricks for friends and family to start and especially at a school word travels fast and soon youll be performing for total strangers and then youll get the feel for it. something like birthday party pro is great for someone who has a routine set out and wants to show more magic, not so great for someone wanting to try and see if they can perform for strangers because strangers and family are far different.
